How games saved my life

Not necessarily my life, but other gamers' lives.

Whenever you hear about games in the media, it's usually about one of two things:

  • How violence acted out by a person is linked to their gaming
  • Or some scientific study linking violent behaviour to gaming

There's this terrible stigma that gaming causes violence, which is completely inaccurate.

Ashley Burch, a popular blogger, agrees that games are almost always portrayed in a negative manner. So she started a blog called How Games Saved My Life. Readers can submit a short story about a game or gaming in general and how it made an impact on their lives. A lot of the stories are reasonably mundane, but when you read about how an obscure SNES game like Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday helped a 9 year old kid cope with the horror of his mother's attempted suicide, you realise that games sometimes have a much deeper meaning to a lot of people.

Gaming means a lot to me and while I certainly haven't experienced anything as traumatic as that, I can understand how gaming helped heal the wounds.

I've been there.

Turning 30: The geeky way

I am a geek. I identify myself with the word and I sometimes even introduce myself as a geek to people I meet. It kind of sums up who I am. I am a geek and I am proud of it.
