Valve confirms: Steam hacked, some information may be stolen

The Steam forums have been offline for a few days and users have been kept in the dark until now. Earlier today, Valve's Gabe Newell sent a message to Steam users that their data may have been compromised.

Usernames, hashed and salted passwords and encrypted credit card information was accessed. Gabe goes on to say that there has been no evidence of credit card misuse and no evidence that the data has been copied from the servers, although they are still investigating.

Valve does caution users to keep an eye on their credit card statements though, just to be on the safe side. It might also be a good idea to change your Steam password.
