Cycling again?

The week has scarcely begun and I am swamped. I am preparing the last hardware in a 3-month hardware deployment project this week. I am getting to grips with Wordpress theming at home. And last but not least, my brother-in-law has signed me up for the 50km MTN OFM Mountain Bike Race in Bloemfontein this weekend.

Guess who has not been playing much games this week?

On the theming side of things, I believe that if I push through with it, I will be able to port a free Wordpress theme over to Drupal. No, I haven't forgotten what I promised in an earlier post. Let's face it, Wordpress themes are just a step above Drupal themes. I stil prefer Drupal as a CMS though. I can do so much more with it and even though it might seem overwhelming in the beginning, once you understand the terminology behind Drupal, you're home free and ready to build websites like a pro.

Also, Windows 7 has officially been released to the general public. Even better is that our company has already bought us a few hundred licenses so that we can install on our work laptops if we want to. Just one problem. I cannot find enough hard drive space to back everything up before I do a clean install. Very annoying. So far I'm one of the few people in my office that does not have it installed. To think I'm considered a geek between my peers...

I've been looking at external hard drive prices to solve my little backup problem but there is still a big disparity between external drives that are AC-powered and drives that are USB-powered. Yes, the USB-powered drives present a more convenient solution as you don't need to lug around those power supplies for the drives. I don't believe they have that much value for money though.

An AC-powered 1TB drive will cost you just over a R1000 now. For a little over R1100, you can get a 500GB USB-powered drive. So that would make it a R100 more for half the space. You see, that kind of math just does not make any sense to me.

At the end of the day though, I am still itching to buy a new computer. There are some great games coming out in the next year or two that I just have to play. Starcraft II and Diablo III are quite high on that list of future games that I need to prepare for.

And it isn't just future games that I have to prepare for. My PC at home is pretty old. It's still running an AGP-based Radeon 9200SE. Yes, it's that old. So there are some slightly older games that I have missed out on as well. Dawn of War II comes to mind, as well as Neverwinter Nights 2 that I never got around to. There are also a LOT of older games coming out under the budget "Exclusive" and "Super Hits" labels. Games like Doom 3, Homeworld 2 and Neverwinter Nights plus all the expansions... all for under R70 each.

So I am desperately trying to save some money for a PC that will last me another 4 years or so, if that is even possible with the speed things are moving these days. One can only hope.

Well, wish me luck for this weekend. Let's see if 50km's are going to be the end of me.

New PC

At least you know that when you're done gaming with your new PC and consider it "old", your wife can still download and store her photos and Word Documents on the "old" PC. Plus she can actually then play Fairway Solitaire without interruption! SO nice!
