Windows 7 - Already cracked
Actually, we should probably not be surprised.
Windows 7, the latest incarnation of the famous (infamous?) operating system by Microsoft, has been cracked.
The system was scheduled to go on sale on 22 October 2009.
This means that pirates will have the latest version of Windows 7 Ultimate long before most consumers have bought a copy off the shelves.
Microsoft is aware of the situation and has cautioned people against downloading versions of Windows from unauthorised sources, as these versions might be riddled with malware and spyware.
It was an interesting crack though and quite frankly, not that tough. You can read about the methods the crackers used, over here.
So will you be getting (or even trusting) a pirate version of Windows 7 Ultimate?
Personally, I can't wait for the Windows 7 Home Premium Family pack. This pack will have three licenses for computers, probably for the price of one.
My wife and I bought the Microsoft Office 2007 Student and Home edition, for R799. That also included three licenses. How can you pass up a deal like that?
Hopefully, the Windows 7 Family pack will be in more or less the same price range.
That still means I would have to get that computer upgrade I've been wanting for a while now.

...and blacklisted
Microsoft blacklisted the hacked Lenovo key about a day after it was hacked, so not bad on their side.
Windows 7 should run fine on any PC that can run Vista as I have noticed that Windows 7 is faster and more responsive than Vista on my computer. Now, if I really want to go through all the hassle, I can probably test it on my download server which is an old Athlon XP2400 with 512 Meg RAM on which Vista runs just fine (although a bit slow).
As for pricing, you might look at double what you paid for Office if I look at the international prices for the Family Pack, but let us hope they take our poor South Africans into account and reduce the price a bit.
Then again, if you were an official tester of the Beta, you do get a free copy of Ultimate ;)
Good!
I am willing to pay up to R1800 for three licenses, it's still a good price compared to other options we see here.
Yes, I saw about everyone getting a free copy of Ultimate... wish I was a Beta tester :)
