Left 4 Dead on your cellphone?

This is strange beyond belief.

Would you like to play the latest and greatest games on your cellular?

I am not kidding, there's a company called OTOY that promises this technology soon.

Techcrunch was able to demo the technology before the launch.

What the technology enables is the server side rendering of the 3D information and then streaming the results of that over a browser. So while they started with this technology as a way to 'stream' games over a browser (think Quake Live), one of the 'added' benefits is that it will work with any decent browser. These include the browsers on mobile phones.

Below is a video of the technology running on a Samsung Omnia.

Yes, that is an Xbox 360 controller that is paired via wireless with the phone. Although, I suspect that it needs to pair via a PC first and then via Bluetooth to the phone?

The guys at OTOY are saying that it will work on connections as low as 1.5MB, so no go for this technology in South Africa unless you have HSDPA.

There is one thing that scares me about this technology though. What about all the guys addicted to World of Warcraft and other popular MMO's? Can you imagine them taking their phones along to the bathroom so that they can do a quick quest or two?

Over all though, putting my personal fears aside, this is a very impressive bit of technology.

What games would you play in the bathroom?

I'm kind of preferential to Final Fantasy VII myself...
