Xbox down!

Well, it finally happened.

My Xbox 360 has stopped functioning.

Or rather, it hasn't. I know it's confusing, but let me explain.  read more »

Oink

I am currently on my back, in bed, sick as a dog.

Well, more accurately, sick as a pig.

I leave the training center at four in the afternoon with a mild head-ache. When I get home, I have chills, neck-aches, a sore throat and a high fever. This is in three hours time! So it's off to the doctor the next morning.

The doctor's let me know that I probably have swine flu. In fact, most of the flu cases in South Africa today have a very big chance of being swine flu.

I can't send away blood samples for tests though.  read more »

The race card again?

Let me start by saying this: I am not a racist!

The scary thing is, I have been so conditioned by defending myself every time I say it, that I still feel guilty when I do say it. Why is that I have to defend myself because I have a white skin?

I know this rant looks random, but it's not.

It all started with the plight of Caster Semenya and the question regarding her gender.  read more »

Facebook Privacy

How many times have you seen those funny emails and pictures with people getting caught out/fired on Facebook because of a status update they thought was private?

Kyle Doyle for example took a 'sickie', a day where you basically stay at home and do nothing. Most countries do not require a doctor's certificate for only one day off work. Kyle then proceeded to brag about that particular fact on Facebook.  read more »

Why is there never enough time!?

I have too many hobbies to support. Supporting hobbies is like supporting children.

Each hobby has got it's own needs and wants, whether it be upgradres for your computer to be able to play better games, or enough time on the driving range to be able to actually go to a course or even more paint because your last batch of Warhammer paint is almost dried up because of disuse.

The most expensive item that ALL hobbies require though, is time.

I do not have enough time for all my hobbies.  read more »

The lurking beast

It has been lurking for a while now. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Waiting to catch me unaware.

This morning it struck. I was left defenseless.

This morning, I had my first asthma attack in two months. Not a bad one, but even as I write this entry, I can feel my breath being short and not getting the same amount of oxygen into my lungs that I normally do.

I didn't have my asthma pump with me either. Quite stupid of me actually.  read more »

How to force a Linux kernel panic

I received a funny request from a colleague today.

He wanted to know if I can force a kernel panic on a Linux box.

First question: Why?

It turns out they are testing some component of VMWare that will be able to detect when a machine has panicked or stopped responding or something.

Now, kernel panics are not an easy thing to initiate. The Linux kernel is reasonably strong and it should be able to handle most errors without any effort.

The request was made though and I started trying to find an answer.

Surprisingly enough, the answer was reasonably difficult to find.  read more »
